Real Answers About Your Child's Health

Snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, behavior struggles, bedwetting, and poor development are often dismissed as “normal” or something kids “grow out of.” Our airway-focused pediatric assessment may help uncover whether sleep-disordered breathing is affecting your child’s health and development.

Understanding Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea

When a child has obstructive sleep apnea, the airway can narrow or collapse during sleep as muscles relax, reducing airflow. This causes drops in oxygen or rises in carbon dioxide, triggering brief awakenings to restore breathing. This can happen many times each night, disrupting sleep and preventing the deep, restorative rest growing bodies need.

During key growth years, especially ages two to six, this can impact brain development, facial growth, and behavior. Addressing the underlying breathing issue can significantly improve these effects.

It might seem surprising, but a child’s jaw and mouth play an important role in how they sleep. When the jaw is small or underdeveloped, there may not be enough room for the tongue to rest properly. At night, the tongue can fall back toward the airway, partially blocking airflow.

  • Underdeveloped jaws
Modern soft diets mean less chewing, which can limit jaw growth.
  • Mouth breathing
Allergies, congestion, or habits can shift breathing from nose to mouth, affecting facial development.
  • Low tongue posture
When the tongue rests low instead of against the roof of the mouth, the palate can narrow.
  • Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
These can crowd the airway and make breathing more difficult.

Signs Your Child May Have Sleep or Breathing Issues

Snoring

Snoring in children can be caused by a partial blockage in the airway at the back of the throat or nose.

Overeating

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may cause weight gain due to the effects of OSA on the hormone leptin.

Getting in Trouble at School

Hyperactivity, trouble concentrating, and mood swings can result in the misdiagnosis of a behavioral problem.

Sleep Issues & Daytime Fatigue

Sleep disordered breathing can affect your child’s ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, and stay awake during the day.
